1. HEALTHCARE IN SPAIN
A lot of our clients ask about the hospitals and healthcare in so
I have put together some information for you all.

The Spanish are one of the healthiest nations and this is mainly
due to the climate and diet. The world health organisation say
Costa Blanca is one of the healthiest places to live. The benefits
to sufferers of arthritis, rheumatism, allergies and skin
complaints have been well documented over the years.

Spain has a high quality national health service which works
alongside the private sector. The standard of treatment is first
class, with many of the doctors etc., being able to speak
English. No waiting lists here! Spain has 2.5 times
as many doctors per head as the UK. Patient care is among the
highest in Europe.

As a visitor, you will not be entitled to public health care
unless you need urgent medical attention and you produce a form
E111. You can obtain this from the Post Office.

if you plan to stay in Spain for longer than 183 days then you
can apply for a Spanish residency permit (Permiso de
Residencia). You will then be covered by the Spanish social
security system.
Once your application for residency is granted, and you are
contributing towards Spanish social security, you and your family
should be entitled to free or subsidised medical & dental
treatment. If you receive a state pension from another EEA
country however, you should be entitled to this service
(check this with your solicitor). Once this is granted, you will
be issued with a social security card to show you are a member
of INSULAD (the Spanish equivalent of Britain's NHS).

Chemists.
All chemist's shops (Farmacias) display a large green cross
outside. They are open normal shop hours - usually 09.30 to 13.30
and 17.00 to 21.00 - but there is also an emergency chemist on
duty in each town outside these hours. To find out which chemist
is on emergency duty, either telephone the local police, the
health centre or check on the door of any chemist's shop where
the duty rota will be displayed. The chemist will always offer
advice on medication for minor ailments as they
are highly trained and have the ability to prescribe some
medicines that require prescription in the UK. Most of the
pharmacists in Spain speak some English.

Hospitals.
There a three excellent hospitals in the Torrevieja area. The
newest and biggest being the San Jamie hospital which opened
in February 2000 is available to all with health insurance.

2. CHEAP FLIGHTS - £50.98 RETURN STANSTED/MURCIA
Ryan Air are now advertising ridiculously cheap flights. Prices
are excluding taxes, fees and charges but on this basis the
price of tickets from Stansted to Blackpool is Free! Stansted
to Murcia is advertised at £21.99 although when I tried to find
a flight at this price the best I could get was £25.49 each way.
still not bad, as long as you can travel Monday - Wednesday.
Taxes, fees and charges are:
£6.40 PSC - Non Refundable £2.77 Government Tax
£1.86 Insurance Levey £0.94 airport tax
£5.00 UK Air duty £1.86 Insurance Levy
£13.26 Total Going out £5.57 Total Coming back
£4 for credit card bookings £1 for debit card bookings.
Therefore my return flight booked on a credit card would come
to grand total of £73.81. Still not bad!
See www.ryanair.com
Ryan Air also now fly from Birmingham.
Unfortunately I couldn't get this price for the days I wanted
to travel. Flights for the beginning of October were around
£118 return, Easy Jet prices where about the same so I
eventually booked with Monarch for £97 each return. It goes to
show that the budget airlines are not always the cheapest.
